In 2010 the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals upheld a ban on prisoners playing Dungeons & Dragons while incarcerated. They were concerned that the Game Masters role as game leader equated to gang leadership.
Role playing give it's players the opportunity to resolve conflicts without physical violence and requires them to think through the consequence of their in-game characters actions.
With prison offering so few opportunities for creative outlet or safe conflict resolution, it seems a shame that this tool has been banned instead of explored as a rehabilitation tool.
